## Our survival guide

The principles we work by at Webikon. There aren’t many of them, and most come down to common sense.

If you’re thinking about working at Webikon, start here.

### How we make decisions

In your own area you have full rights and full responsibility. So most decisions are made by whoever is working on the thing.

#### Do what you enjoy

You only really thrive when you’re doing what you enjoy. Look for it, and look for a way of doing it that is useful to you and to everyone else.

#### Freedom and responsibility

We work together on common sense and personal responsibility. A decision you make freely is a commitment to see it through.

#### Common sense

We don’t have a thick rulebook, orders or bans. Do everything you can to keep clients, colleagues and yourself happy. Look at the established practices (and add to them), listen to others, and then decide.

#### Making decisions

Decide freely and as well as you can. When you don’t know something, ask a colleague or someone outside the company. Get advice when you think you need it, but don’t ask for permission.

#### The waterline

Talk through any decision that could go below the waterline, meaning it could fundamentally affect how the company runs. Strategic matters such as hiring, large projects or investments are discussed as a team, and we try to reach agreement.

### How we get along

Good relationships rest on respect, kept agreements and open communication.

#### Decency

We build relationships on mutual respect and decency.

#### Agreements are sacred

Do what you promised. The people you made the agreement with are counting on it. You can only change an agreement if everyone who made it agrees to the change. We take a verbal agreement as seriously as a written contract, but it’s better to write important things down.

#### Communication

Everything stands or falls on communication:

- Give praise when you like something.
- Object when you disagree.
- Ask when something is unclear.
- Say no when something doesn’t suit you.
- Answer when you’re asked.
- If you can’t answer, it’s fine to say “I don’t know”.
- Give feedback, and take criticism with an open mind.
- Share interesting information.
- Suggest improvements.
- Listen to others and expect them to listen to you. But listening doesn’t mean obeying.
- Speak up when you have doubts, worries or just a bad feeling.
- Tell the truth.

#### We make mistakes

If you never make mistakes, you’re not taking enough risks. What mistake did you make today, and what did you learn from it? We keep trying new things and new ways of working. Learning from other people’s mistakes is cheapest, but your own teach you the most.

#### Open to change

Don’t be afraid to suggest a change or to make it yourself. If you have an idea for improving something, you can go ahead and do it. If you need colleagues for it, bring them in.

### How things are set up

You decide your own hours, place of work and holidays. What matters is that clients and colleagues don’t suffer for it.

#### Roles, not bosses

We don’t have bosses in the traditional sense. We have clearly defined roles and responsibilities, but anyone who shows initiative can take on any role. A leader is whoever earns the respect of the others. We don’t play games with titles and job names.

#### New colleagues

Anyone from the team can join an interview, so expect to meet several of us. The team decides whether a new colleague joins.

#### Working hours

We don’t have fixed working hours. Everyone is most productive at a different time of day, so some of us work in the morning, some in the afternoon and some at night.

#### Where we work

We work wherever suits us, mostly from home. If you work better in the office, come in. If you work better in a forest, you can work from there too.

#### Holidays

You can go on holiday whenever you like. Just arrange things so that nobody else suffers while you’re away. Holidays matter for your health, and there’s no good reason to put them off. The best ideas don’t come in the office anyway.
